IHUWASH Components



The IHUWASH Accelerator works with the city governments of Faridabad, Mysuru and Udaipur to identify and support high impact market-based WASH innovations for India’s pressing urban WASH problems. The program over a 7 to 12 month period will help the selected innovations to get focused support from city governments, private sector companies, experts and impact investors.”


WASH Labs were conceptualised for creating a dedicated team and manpower resource at the city level. For better ownership of city stakeholders WASH Labs were established through a tripartite agreement between NIU, city corporations and city based academic institute (identified by team). As per name, WASH Labs Have been acting as space for experiment, learn and develop. Teams are prepared through capacity building initiatives, innovative solutions are developed through consultations, talks and testing. Activities for generating mass awareness are also planned under WASH Labs.


Toilet Prototype

IHUWASH is working with the state governments of Udaipur, Mysuru and Faridabad to construct innovative public and community toilet prototypes. These innovative toilets will be designed taking in consideration the local geo-climatic needs, cultural conditions and the requirements of women, children, elderly and the differently-abled.

Each of the selected cities will have 1 community toilet and 3 public toilets with state-of-the-art features, making the toilets of today both attractive and affordable.


With a dual intent of fostering positive behaviour towards WASH and secondly ensuring participation of masses in building sustainable WASH ecosystem, a concept of WASH park is conceived under IHUWASH initiative. These park are under process of development.

Park will be build up as knowledge hub as well as exhibition place where innovation technology and its impact will be demonstrated. This will also be a place of dissemination of best practices open to all so that positive attitude towards WASH can be generated. Park will also have dedicated spaces for capacity building and mass awareness activities. Audio and video messaging will be feature to bring in change in people’s perception regarding WASH behaviour and practices. The revenue generated by these park will make it self-sustainable model. Private sector has shown their interest to nourish the ideas with required resources.


Incubation center

IHUWASH created incubation centres. Academic centres were identified in cities to develop as incubation centre. As name itself suggests, the objective is to mentor and incubate innovate solutions.

Young entrepreneurs working in domain of WASH and green technology are nurtured for the success of their startups and to scale up their business. These centres focused on understanding the local WASH needs of the respective cities and identify innovative solutions new as well as existing that are relevant to the local context.

National WASH Innovation Summit

A National WASH Innovation Summit aimed at “Enabling Innovation Ecosystems for WASH” was organized in November 2018 in New Delhi. The summit was graced and inaugurated by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, then Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (M/o HUA). During the summit, a special issue of the e-Gov magazine – “WASH Innovations- Emerging Trends in Urban Sector” was also released. The summit also marked the launch of a WASH Economy Report. The report was a novel effort in understanding the contribution of the WASH sector in the national economy and its impact on livelihood generation.
