WASH Innovation Lab

In India, innovations are gaining momentum across sectors especially in urban areas through government (AIM, DST), non-governmental (FICCI) and international donor agencies support (USAID).  However, at the local or regional level there are limited attempts to institutionalize innovations.  The Innovation Hub for Urban WASH (IHUWASH) project by NIUA and allied partners intends to improve the urban WASH sector performance by incubating, accelerating and scaling up WASH innovations.

Under the project, IHUWASH has conceptualized a WASH Innovation Lab at the city level to fill the gap of availability of a city based independent body that can offer its support to ULB while planning, desigining and executing innovative WASH solutions not only at the pilot cities but also at any city of the state. The Lab will be housed within a local institution – a training institute or a college of learning – where the pool of resource personscan study the local context, issues and challenges of WASH sector and bring the latest knowledge to address issues. In essence, the Lab will be a space where experts can think innovatively and experiment with new ideas to find solutions that are local and innovations that are appropriate.

The WASH Innovation Lab will be suitably equipped and deeply connected with the local reality as well as the world beyond the city limits. It will be a space where students can come to find exposure and ask questions, where the expert can become a thought champion and an agent of transformation from within, and advocate for change and a promoter of new and creative ideas.
